History of the Chuvash people and the Chuvash region from the 9th to the beginning of the 20th century

The historical roots of the Chuvash people go back to ancient times. One of the showcases presents archaeological materials found during excavations in the territory of the region: tools, household items, crafts and trade, weapons and jewelry. The ancestors of the Chuvash had their own state – Volga Bulgaria.

The exposition reflects the era of the Mongol-Tatar yoke. The center of the historical and artistic composition is the diorama «They beat off the enemy». This piece of history is characterized by the hoard of Jochid coins, pottery, the map of the «Mongol-Tatar uluses», weapons items presented in the exposition.

The expansion of the ethnic composition of the population of the region in the 17th-19th centuries is shown by the costumes and adornments of the Chuvash, Russians, mountain Maris, Tatars-Mishars, Mordovian-Erzyas.

The exposition of the hall and the interiors introduce the features of the traditional culture of the Chuvash people, life, and the main occupations of the population: wood carving, embroidery, weaving and others.

The material on education has been singled out as a separate thematic complex. Photos and documents reveal the development of education in the Chuvash region. The educational activities of I. Ya. Yakovlev, his followers, the merits and achievements of his students are reflected in the exposition.

With the use of memorial furniture, the interior of the dining room of the merchant’s mansion was recreated: photographs and a portrait of Mikhail Efremov, a merchant of the 1st guild.
