Chuvash national museum

The Central Chuvash Museum (now the Chuvash National Museum) was opened on February 12, 1921 by a resolution of the regional section for museums and the protection of monuments of art and antiquity of the Chuvash Autonomous Region. It was organized by a group of intellectuals from Cheboksary, headed by Nikolai Pavlovich Neverov. In April 1993, by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Chuvash Republic, it was transformed into the Chuvash National Museum.

The museum funds contain more than 212 thousand items. There are 40 thousand artifacts in the archaeological collection, which includes eponymous monuments of the two largest cultures of the Bronze Age of the European part of Russia – Abashevskaya and Balanovskaya. Among the items that are the pride of the museum are the original 500 kg artillery cannon of the Pugachev troops, and the silver ladle of Catherine the Great, which she presented to the merchant from Yadrin for help in suppressing the rebellion. The sculptural image of Khĕrt-Surt, the patron spirit of the home, an anthropomorphic grave monument, tax tags give an idea of the ancient runic writing that reached the middle of the 17th – early 18th centuries.

Permanent exhibitions are available for visiting: «Ancient inhabitants of the Chuvash region according to archeology and paleontology», «History of the Chuvash people and the Chuvash region from the 9th to the beginning of the 20th century», «Chuvashia in the 20th century», «Nature and man».
